Who am I?

Well that’s a very complicated, philosophical question you ask! My name is Adam Millett, and I’m a freelance writer, blogger, and poet with a passion for sustainability and making a difference.

Travelling man

I’m from the west of Ireland originally but I love to travel around and live in different places, and so far, I’ve been lucky enough to live in Dublin, Amsterdam, Huntington Beach California, San Francisco, and even Phnom Penh in Cambodia! And I’m currently volunteering on some sustainable farms in Portugal so expect to see some posts on here about that!

A passion for sustainability

I first formed a passion for sustainability while doing a masters degree in marketing in Dublin City University. During the course we were taught about so many different methods of marketing; how to sell random ‘stuff’ to businesses, how to get ‘working professionals’ to fall in love with a particular brand of coffee. How to make children obsess about shoes that have three stripes instead of two stripes! It all seemed a little pointless to me, and more than a little bit reckless. But one module that stood out was ‘sustainability marketing’. It taught us about the increasing notion that companies need to start balancing financial performance with environmental and social impact. That the ‘bottom line’ can no longer be written in dollar signs and polluted minds. For me, ‘sustainability marketing’ offered a sliver of hope in a deep sea of ‘clever slogan’ shaped despair. And sometimes, a little hope is all you need!

A liking for writing

Upon graduating, as often seems to be the case when people finish their degrees and are faced with the prospect of the big bad world, I had no idea what I wanted to do with myself, but I knew that I wanted to see some more of the world. You know? This big beautiful world of ours that we still have the power to save! And so, I moved to Amsterdam and started working as an editor for a big media company, and started soaking in the Dutch culture! I stayed for about a year, and then moved on to San Francisco, and so on, and so on. It was while travelling around and working in various marketing roles and odd jobs (some much odder than others) that I discovered my passion for writing. What began as writing marketing copy at work morphed into writing poetry about politics and humanity and the universe at home and soon expanded into writing full blown articles about sustainability and essays about saving the world. Safe to say, I went travelling around the world and came back with a love for writing.

To the future!

And so here I am, a curly headed Irish ‘hippy’ wannabe volunteering on a sustainable farm in Portugal, writing a blog about hope and a brighter future, and working as a freelance writer for sustainably run companies. And more so than anything, enjoying this beautiful world we are so lucky to call home.

But enough about me. What’s your story?
